Community

Hmm - when it comes to defining the word 'community' things get a bit harder.

According to global oracle Wikipedia, sociologists have yet to agree on a definition for the word community and it causes great debate. It does say however that since the advent of the web, the concept of community no longer has geographical limitations.

The rise of the social web no doubt has sociologists debating even more furiously about what 'community' really means.

When Google attempted to take on Facebook this year, its big idea was 'circles' - a way to categorise those who you communicate with. This led to some observers giving a brutally honest assessment of what those categories should be...

  • pays me money
  • wants stuff from me
  • talks too much
  • makes me smile
  • may have sat next to in class
  • I wish would circle me back
  • finds cool stuff
  • would like to meet more for real
  • happy to remove

As tongue in cheek as these observations may have been, they cut right to the heart of debates about the growth of social media and the nature of community.

The challenge for organisations today is to identify where they fit in these 'circles' and therefore how they should behave and respond.
